We never fail to be amazed by just how rich the Forest of Dean is with creative people, particularly artists.
What’s more, Puzzlewood holds a particular fascination for many, and local landscape artist Warren Day is no exception.
Having grown up locally, Warren now works from his studio just 10 minutes away from Puzzlewood. Interestingly, as a child and massive fan of Star Wars, he remembers visiting and pretending he was on some distant planet, something his son – also a big fan of the films – can virtually believe since Puzzlewood has been used as a location for the Star Wars franchise!
After the birth of his son, Warren returned to the forest and this reinvigorated his interest in painting, as he was again immersed in this beautiful landscape.
Warren started his career as an illustrator before qualifying as an art teacher and, alongside painting, he tutors at a local arts centre. Warren’s love of trees and undergrowth makes Puzzlewood an ideal subject and he feels very connected to the space.
What distinguishes his work are the real earth samples that are integrated into the artwork, adding texture and reinforcing the connection between the landscape and the painting. On closer inspection one can see small fragments of leaves, seeds and other organic matter within this ‘living painting medium’. Mixed media and gouache painting capture the exquisite and highly detailed beauty.
He exhibits regularly and his work can be seen at nearby Creates Gallery in Monmouth and the Dean Heritage Centre near Soudley.
Upon seeing his work, many people have said that Warren has a natural affinity with the forest, which is no surprise as he enjoys cross country running and walks his dog everyday and sees the subtle changes and detail throughout the seasons as he lives and breathes the forest that is reference for his paintings.
Puzzlewood provides endless artistic inspiration
He says: “I’ve visited Puzzlewood far too many times to count. I love taking friends and family who don’t live in the area to visit because it is so unique. I’ve painted many Forest of Dean locations but Puzzlewood literally immerses you into the landscape. You can see where time has passed, with moss and lichen and the twisted shapes of the branches and tree roots in a condensed space. You can see a variety of levels as you are walking through and truly feel close to nature and the forest. And in the depths of the wood there is a particular quality of light and texture that is fascinating.”
Warren realises he is lucky to have Puzzlewood on his doorstep and recommends it to other artists: “Puzzlewood is a continual source of inspiration. The light and colours change throughout the seasons, so every visit there is something different to see and explore. It’s an ideal place to paint.” In fact, as we write, Warren is planning his next Puzzlewood painting!
You can see examples of Warren’s work on his website and Facebook page, where you can contact him directly about commissions and prints of his work. With pieces ranging from miniature to large scale, you’re bound to have space on a wall somewhere for a fabulous painting of Puzzlewood!
